In what’s become known as ‘Super Saturday’, July 4 marks the biggest swathe of lockdown rollbacks in England so far.

Pubs, restaurants, bars, cinemas and, yes, hairdressers have been allowed to reopen provided they are ‘Covid-secure.’

While this has come as welcome news to many sick of risking their own DIY trims at home, the question remains: what about beauty salons that do more than just hair?

When can beauty salons reopen?

At the time of writing, other ‘close contact’ beauty businesses have not been allowed to reopen yet in England, and no date has been given yet for when we might be able to expect them to open.

That means tanning salons, nail bars and beauty salons have remained closed, along with tattoo parlours and piercing studios.

In his speech first announcing the 4 July changes to lockdown measures, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: ‘Almost as eagerly awaited as a pint will be a haircut, particularly by me, and so we will re-open hairdressers, with appropriate precautions, including the use of visors.

‘We also intend to allow some other close contact services, such as nail bars, to re-open as soon as we can, when we are confident they can operate in a Covid-secure way.’

As for other parts of the UK, hairdressers, salons and barbershops are set to reopen in Northern Ireland on Monday, 6 July, while in Wales they remain closed with the next review of lockdown measures due on 9 July.

In Scotland, hairdressers are due to open their doors again on July 15, however there is as yet no date set for beauty salons to reopen.
